I'm an Irish student studying Adult nursing with a massive drive an enthusiasm for specializing and really learning my stuff. I have always wanted to be a specialist and was planning to become a specialist nurse until a mentor of mine suggested that the newly emerging PA or PA(A) would suit me very well and to consider it as a progression route. Now I may be a young man full of nativity but I work damn hard, I suffered to get where I am and always put my work in, The trust I work in has a wonderful team environment with so many advanced and specialized nurses with PA's both employed and training. The level of bitterness and anger on this thread is alarming and honestly hurts to see. Why is it medicine is all about muscle flexing and throwing your weight and titles around? A doctor is always the clinical lead so why is it that some feel the need to belittle and speaking candidly shit on my goals and aspirations? Now I would be incredibly grateful if any PA's or PA(A) could contact me and just help a young student out? It would be much appreciated!Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01071263246281905513noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2482732367812174734.post-85325155449965187792016-04-07T21:34:50.103+00:002016-04-07T21:34:50.103+00:00Goodness. They are only interested in training PAs to be better medical professionals. So the attendings can take more vacations. Just kidding :p

In short, a medical system supported only by doctors and nurses is not sustainable, particularly with the growing elderly population. I don't know about the UK, but the U.S. cannot afford to staff every single hospital and clinic with attendings and residents (residents = junior doctors), unless we begin requiring both our attendings and residents to work twice as much with half the pay (for comparison, we've already "limited" our residents' hours to 80 hours a week - although we're thinking of removing that limit because of the huge demands for medical care). PAs allow for better continuity of care and for wider access to primary care (because, in the U.S., doctors don't want to go into primary care as it is the lowest paid specialty - this results in fewer and fewer primary care doctors every year).

I've noticed most of the people with negative comments appear to still be in training. Just wait until you get out into the real world. Then you will be crying for a PA to come help you with your massive workload. :pAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2482732367812174734.post-64963097597380380802016-02-02T02:48:56.562+00:002016-02-02T02:48:56.562+00:00I am neither a doctor or a PA, they're both th...I am neither a doctor or a PA, they're both there to help care for patients though?!To diagnose, treat and help others live healthily?!So what's all the hype about?!As far as I see it,medics choose to study for 5+ years because of the prestige, the power, sense of responsibility (a good thing I guess) and PAs choose the shorter route (could be because of their own time constraints,funding,kids/family or other responsibilities).Either way they save lives-that's a great job-learn to love life, love others.Respect each other. You're on the same side. The winning side.Best side to be :) ShuggyShuggyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12643371160988123234noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2482732367812174734.post-84027640555764017332015-08-31T06:52:20.618+00:002015-08-31T06:52:20.618+00:00Very well said. I never wanted to be a Dr hence never going to medical school. I did however want a challenging career that enabled me to provide excellent patient care as part of a mdt. When did being a healthcare professional become all about how many qualifications you have? Surely it is about the best care for patients, that is after all why people are supposed to choose such careers, an inbuilt moral conscience for the greater good. Perhaps I am niave or too idealisitic but after working in an inner London Hospital I can assure you that physician assistants and nurse practitioners do provide a useful service. It is unfortunate that the pressures of targets etc are pushing the NHS to bursting point. Doctors, nurses and physician assistants all have different job specifications and skills, yes some of them overlap, but in general it all works very well to provide the best care to patients in a very difficult and stressful environment. Patients keep on coming in regardless, PAs help. Surely we should all respect each other and appreciate the work each of us do?Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2482732367812174734.post-87587641334006866212012-10-29T20:02:05.969+00:002012-10-29T20:02:05.969+00:00Poor Doc's on their high horse as usualPoor Doc's on their high horse as usual Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2482732367812174734.post-36902332332112781492012-09-13T20:59:26.540+00:002012-09-13T20:59:26.540+00:00There are PA's in neuro who are trained to do ...There are PA's in neuro who are trained to do LP's but from what I know the Doctor's training isn't taken away. But they have surprised me; In Cardiology there are PA's doing Central Lines and when the juniors are unsure about something they will ask the PA. In A&e they essentially do everything from start to finish with a patient and theres a PA in Birmingham City hospital who will see really unwell patients. Some of them can even do their own Fastscans.
I don't think they are out there to take over other people's jobs or roles; they are really friendly people and help their fellow colleagues alot, you can handover patients to them and they will make sure jobs are done etc.
Give them a break.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2482732367812174734.post-82541813650807169142012-08-29T19:08:36.290+00:002012-08-29T19:08:36.290+00:00I take some responsibility for my practices as a m...I take some responsibility for my practices as a member of a health care team, I keep a portfolio and record patient numbers for any surgical procedure I carry out plus any complex practices such as insulin initiation. I also keep anonymised copies of a variety of referral letters I've sent and a comprehensive record of ALL CPD I do. As a PA I make sure I can demonstrate my worth because it is a new role. My mentor looked through EVERY patients I saw for my first 18 months in practice and I have seen approx 35 patients a day for the past 2 years with Absolutely NO complaints from a single patient and absolutely NO issues with my practice, in fact I have had 2 lung cancers come through my on call in this time and have picked up both the first time I met these patients - despite never seeing them before. I am a competent health care professional who takes my job very seriously and practices medicine to the absolute best of my ability, it is ridiculous to think a PA cant add anything to the health care team, I've had at least 3 practices approach me about a job in the past 2 years so PAs who aren't finding employment need to get out there and show the world what they are aboutAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2482732367812174734.post-65098214850207479982012-08-29T18:53:46.622+00:002012-08-29T18:53:46.622+00:00I qualified from UH and had a skills workbook that...I qualified from UH and had a skills workbook that had to be signed off, not only once but had to be signed to say I had watched the skill then I had safely been supervised carrying out the skill.
